DIY: How to paint feathers in watercolour

Posted on Posted in DIY Arts & Craft

A friend asked me: “How do you decide what to paint?” , I really started thinking what to say because I never really gave it a thought.

I paint everything that catches my eye, sometimes I become so involved with painting one particular theme that sometimes it lasts for months. That`s the case with the feathers. I have been in my “FEATHER PERIOD” for quite some time now and I don`t feel like letting it go any time soon.

Why feathers are so dear to me is simply because of the symbolism they have. I was in Finland when my grandma passed away, it was a very sad period for me and one day on my way back home I found a feather, so pure and beautiful, I took it home with me. And every day on my way to work or home I would find a feather. I started painting the feathers with bright colours, creating colourful explosions. It was something to take my mind off and it comforted me at that time a lot! Moreover it was winter time so you can imagine how depressing it can be without much daylight, that`s why my paintings are full of colours!

So I guess you are still wondering what`s the meaning of feathers that I got so inspired with and painting them 😉 Google no more! Here it is:

Angels are the pure energy of love and light, and so while they’re always near us, their energy is so light and fine that from the density of the physical realm that it’s easy to overlook their presence or miss it entirely. So they send signs to let us know they’re near and offering their love, guidance and support.

Now back to the tutorial. Here is how you start your feather sketch.

I always have a model of a feather so that the painting looks as real as possible.Start with sketching the feather.

And the next step is: You just start applying acrylic, aquarelle, inc, coffee, whatever liquid you have 😀

Hahaha, so I guess you think: ” Whaaat? How did everything evolved so quickly? I just did my sketch and BAM go on on your own?!?!” …or something like that 😀

No worries! I made especially for you this EASY step-by-step video! Please, excuse my hand that is covering the painting the whole time, I hope you will still learn something from it! Meanwhile I will work on making another more professional video 😀

Here it is the finished feather:
